Tracker.

I recently upgraded my computers from Ubuntu Dapper to Edgy. When I say “upgrade”, I mean that I did a clean reinstall of the OS. I have always found Beagle very useful for finding information on my computer. Unfortunately, there is a problem with Beagle on Edgy, which meant beagled rapidly consumed almost 100% of my CPU. I tried various fixes, including deleting the .beagle directory in my home folder and leaving the computer alone while Beagle built a full index. However, none of the suggested solutions worked for me.

While I was reading the Ubuntu forums I stumbled across Tracker . This appears to be an ideal replacement for Beagel, with a much smaller footprint. At the moment the only downside is the lack of a native KDE front end, although there is a Kommander script available. However, if you are a Gnome user, a front end is available. You can get the latest version from here.

Tracker is available as source and as i386 deb packages for Edgy. However, I am running an AMD64 computer, so I decided to build my own packages. You can download the packages from the links at the bottom of this page. Warning, they work fine on my computer, but I won’t guarantee they will work on yours!
