Nokia E61.

I have been using PDA’s since the first Palm Pilot appeared and stuck to Palm devices up to the point where I got a Treo 600. In many ways the Treo was great, but after a Palm T3, I hated the low resolution screen and the device was quite bulky. Last year I jumped ship to Windows Mobile and acquired a T-Mobile MDA Compact (HTC Magician). I have used this for a year, but finally got fed up with it for a number of reasons:

  • After using Palm OS Windows Mobile runs with all the speed of a stunned slug.
  • As a phone it was very poor - dialling a contact almost always meant getting the stylus out. There was often a considerable lag btween tapping number and it appearing on the screen.
  • Internet connectivity was flakey, often requiring a reboot to get it to connect. In contrast my wife’s N70 has always connected first time.
  • I now use Linux and the only way I could get the MDA to sync was to boot up Windows in VMWare.

Someone mentioned that the E61 and after spending several days reading about it I ended up buying one:) With any new device it takes a while to get used to its foibles and for me Symbian is a whole new operating system. So, I decided to set up this wiki as a sort of information dump on how I got things to work, useful applications I found and as a general information resource.
